Taxonomy The species Bellamya capillata, as presently defined on conchyological, anatomical and embryological characters, is clearly polyphyletic in genetic trees. The large genetic diversity (up to 12.6%) in 'B. capillata' specimens from for example Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe suggests that they constitute three different species (Sengupta et al. 2009). A taxonomic revision of the African representatives of the genus Bellamya is therefore needed. [details]
