Biology Type of larval development: direct (non-planktotrophic) inferred from paucispiral protoconch. [details] Diagnosis Shell up to 35 mm, with a moderately high spire. Protoconch small, formed by one smooth whorl. Teleoconch with conspicuous, large foliaceous varices which start on the first postlarval whorl and extend over the protoconch; on the later whorls there are 3-4 varices per whorl, each one abutting on the corresponding varix of the preceding whorl so as to build up large, oblique axial lamellae; the intervening spaces betwen the varixes are swollen, forming axially aligned nodes. Spiral sculpture of faint cords, which become more marked over the varices. Aperture small, regularly oval. Siphonal canal relatively narrow and curved, open along its whole length by a narrow slit, flanked by remnants of previous instances of the canal remaining from former growth stages. Colour white, specimens from the Azores reported to have a few brownish blotches on the varices or the nodes.
The West African Pterynotus leucas (Fischer, 1897) differs in having a larger protoconch and in lacking the swell and nodes in between varices.
