Adams [1853, The Genera of Recent Mollusca, 1: 89] in the form "Genota H. and A. Adams (Genot, Adanson)" (as subgenus of Turris), with Murex mitriformis as one of two included species. The spelling Genota is in prevailing usage and is conserved under ICZN Art. 33.3.1. [details]
