Taxonomy Beu (2005:119) lists the name Dolium zonatum (Green, 1830) in the synonymy of Tonna galea (Linnaeus, 1758), with the remark (2005:121) that he is - at that point - not sure whether two species or a single species is concerned. Vos (2007:57-67) separated the two species based on the available recent material.
The name Dolium zonatum Green, 1830 was used for the species currently referred to as Tonna zonata (Green, 1830) by (a. o.): Reeve (1849 pl. 7, figs. 12a-b): Mörch (1853:111); Küster (1857:75); Hanley (1860:488); Dunker (1860:105); Tryon (1885:263); Paetel (1887:222) [details]
