Taxonomy Unnecessary replacement name for Buccinum olearium sensu Bruguière.
Dodge (1956:162-164) considered the Buccinum olearium of Linnaeus as the large species often erroneously referred to as Tonna olearium (Linnaeus, 1758) and currently referred to as Tonna zonata (Green, 1830), as such considering that the name Buccinum olearium, used by Bruguère in the sense of the species currently referred to as Tonna canaliculata (Linnaeus, 1758) needed replacement, a vision not substantiated by Beu (2005) and Vos (2007). Beu (pers. com. C. Vos) examined the Linnean material of Buccinum olearium and placed that taxon as synonym of Buccinum galea Linnaeus, 1758, a vision substantiated by Vos (2007) [details]
