Status Wenz (1919) introduced Buliminus hassiacus as replacement name Bulimus turgidulus Sandberger, 1872, non Deshayes, 1863....
Status Wenz (1919) introduced Buliminus hassiacus as replacement name Bulimus turgidulus Sandberger, 1872, non Deshayes, 1863. However, despite the identical spelling, the two genera are not homonyms. Deshayes (1863) attributed his species to Bulimus Scopoli, 1777 [a synonym of Bithynia, a freshwater taxon], while Sandberger (1872) clearly referred his to the terrestrial Bulimus Bruguière, 1789. (Sandberger did not explictly state the authority, but from the context and the link with the subgenus Petraeus, there is no doubt.)
According to ICZN Art. 57.8.1., "homonymy between identical species-group names in combination (originally or subsequently) with homonymous generic names having the same spelling but established for different nominal genera is to be disregarded". Therefore, Buliminus hassiacus Wenz, 1919 is a junior objective synonym of Bulimus turgidulus Sandberger, 1872. The classification in Ena later adopted by Wenz (1923) is retained however. [details]
