Type locality "in the dark cannel-like shales exposed in Wham Glen, about 1/2 a mile north by west of Auchinreoch Main, about 2 miles west of Kilsyth, and about 10 miles north slightly by east of Glasgow. The shales, up to 50 feet thick, lie immediately above the Hosie Limestone D (= Top Hosie Limestone), and at the bottom of the Limestone Coal Group of the Lower Carboniferous system." [details]
