Synonymy Huber (2010: 602) synonymized Pinctada maxima (Jameson, 1901) under Pinctada anomioides (Reeve, 1857), which he recognized as a senior synonym. However, Tëmkin (2007) had placed the latter in synonymy of Pinctada albina (Lamarck, 1819) based on his study of the holotype of Avicula anomioides Reeve, 1857. Bieler & Mikkelsen (2025: 5) followed Tëmkin and maintained prevailing usage of the name P. maxima, also in the interest of stability, for the commercially important and frequently cited species.
