Nomenclature Gray cited the type species as "Cerithium mammillatum, Philippi", i.e. Cerithium mamillatum Risso, 1826, as used by Philippi (1836, 1844, Enumeratio molluscorum Siciliae). Cerithium mamillatum Risso, 1826, is now considered a synonym of Bittium latreillii (Payraudeau, 1826), but Philippi used the name for the species currently known as Pirenella conica (Blainville, 1829) and, under Art. 70.3, Petit [2012, Zootaxa, 3214: 92] designated Cerithium conicum Blainville, 1829, as type species of Pirenella. Reid& Ozawa [2016, Zootaxa, 4076(1): 12] argued that Gray had deliberately used Cerithium mammillatum in the sense of Philippi's misidentification; under Art. 67.13, Gray is deemed to have established a new nominal species Pirenella mammillata Gray, 1847.
