Taxonomy This name first appeared as a misidentification in a work rejected for nomenclatural purposes, and was later made available as Syndesmya apelina Récluz, 1843, and was also redescribed (not replacement names) as Tellina pellucida Brocci, 1814 and Erycina (?) renierii Bronn, 1831. These names were used by authors (Récluz, 1843; Deshayes, 1845-1848; Monterosato, 1884) who considered that the Mediterranean and Black sea representatives of Abra alba (Wood, 1802) are specifically distinct from the Atlantic ones. The real Tellina apelina Gmelin is an Indian Ocean species, currently known as Angulinides opalinus (Gmelin, 1791). [details]
