Nomenclature Turner (in Moore, ed., 1969: 721) suggested this emendation of the family name in order to avoid the homonymy with the family name Xylophagidae Fallén, 1810 (based on Xylophagus Meigen, 1803 [Diptera]. However, under ICZN Art. 55.3.1, a change in spelling could be done only by the Commission, which had to be petitioned to amend the spelling of the bivalve name. Coan, Carlton & Evenhuis petitioned the Commission in 2017, and this led to Opinion 2429. [details]
