Type species Crosse (1885) designated as type species Murex carinatus Bivona, 1832, a name denoting a fossil Pleistocene species which Monterosato considered as being the same as the Recent Fusus echinatus Kiener, 1840. The Pleistocene and Recent forms have since been found to represent different species, differing in particular by their protoconchs (Bouchet & Warén 1985, La Perna 1996). Therefore, under the provisions of ICZN art. 70.3, Houart & Sellanes (2006) selected as type species of Pagodula Monterosato, 1884 Fusus echinatus Kiener, 1840, misidentified by Monterosato as Murex carinatus Bivona, 1832.
