Taxonomy Claremont M., Williams S.T., Barraclough T.G. & Reid D.G. (2011), in the supplementary material of a paper "The geographic scale of speciation in a marine snail with high dispersal potential" which appeared in Journal of Biogeography 38: 1016-1032, suggested that this is a junior synonym of Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1767). This view is not justified and there is no reason to question the current view that Purpura viverratoides (currently Gemophos viverratoides) is a valid species in the Buccinidae. The type specimen is still extant in The Natural History Museum, London, and agrees with d'Orbigny's figure (D.G. Reid, pers. comm. March 2014) [details]
