Nomenclature Marche-Marchad (1960:876) considered Maltzan's species M. freytagi as an infra-specific variation of the common M. mesal. To date, its taxonomical positioning is not clear and DNA sampling would be advantageous to sort out this matter. Based on Marche-Marchad's 1960 publication and examination of syntypes from SMNH, Stockholm by the present editor, the synonymy is here supported. [details]
