Taxonomic remark Martyn’s Universal Conchologist was placed by Opinion 456 on the Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Works, but Bouchet (1990) petitioned the Commission and the name Limax fibratus was ruled to be an available name and placed on the Official List by Opinion 1662. Martyn described Limax fibratus from “the Friendly Isles or Iles des Amis” based on a specimen in the collection of a Mrs Fordyce in the Strand, London. The collections on which the Universal Conchologist was based are lost or are unidentifiable. Because the name Limax fibratus has been applied rather erratically and because we regard Placostylus fibratus as a polytypic species, it is appropriate to fix it by the designation of a neotype. At the time of Martyn, the only Europeans who had visited Placostylus localities had been Captain Cook and his party (Hedley in litt., in Pilsbry 1900: 235); based on the account of Cook’s voyage, the type locality can be narrowed down to Ile Améré, where Cook’s party landed in 1774, and which is the only locality surveyed by Cook within the range of Placostylus fibratus fibratus. We select as neotype a specimen from Ile Améré, the presumed landing area of Captain Cook’s party, and which is similar enough to Martyn’s original illustration. Neotype, leg. Bouchet 15.05.1979, MNHN 21335 (Fig. 6; anatomical details Figs 14 A, B). As the name Voluta elongata Lightfoot was originally based on Martyn’s illustration, we designate the neotype of Limax fibratus also the neotype of Voluta elongata, which thus remains an objective synonym. [details]
