Taxonomic remark Name established for a shell in the Spengler collection; the description was not accompanied by an illustration and no locality was mentioned. Chemnitz (1786: pl. 121, figs 1037-1038) illustrated as “Auris midae terrae australis” [unavailable name: non binominal] a shell from the Spengler collection, which was perhaps Müller’s holotype. This specimen is not present
in the Zoologisk Museum, Copenhagen. However, given the date (1774) of the discovery of New Caledonia by Cook, it is
unlikely that Müller had before him a New Caledonia Placostylus species. The name Helix aurismalchi Müller, 1774 has been
suppressed for the Principle of Priority by Opinion 1662. [details]
