Homonymy Invalid: junior secondary homonym of Margaritifera elongata (Lamarck, 1819). Popova (1964) introduced Margaritifera baicalica as replacement name. Also, Modell (1964) introduced a new species, Margaritifera martinsoni, for the material studied by Martinson (1956), although he did not explicitly refer to a homonymy issue. Rather from his formulation it seems that he believed Martinson's record to be a misidentified recent species, but Martinson clearly attributed the authorship of the species to himself. The precedence of the two names is not fully established - Modell's name appeared on 20 July 1964, while Popova's publication date is uncertain. The respective volume was sent to print on 07 February 1964, which makes it likely that the article appeared earlier than July. [details]
