Nomenclature Garrigues & Merle (2014: 857-858), citing ICZN Art. 23.9.5, claimed that Murex hexagonus Gmelin, 1791, and Murex hexagonus Lamarck, 1816, were currently not applied to taxa considered congeneric after 1899, and "restored" Lamarck's name as valid. However, Art. 23.9.5 is about maintaining "prevailing usage" while the case is refered to the Commission. Prevailing usage has treated Murex hexagonus Lamarck, 1816, as a primary junior homonym, and a synonym of Murex haxagonus var. oxytatus M. Smith, 1938. The latter name is in prevailing usage as Murexsul oxytatus. Garrigues & Merle were thus unfounded to restore the name Murex hexagonus Lamarck, 1816. However, they showed that the names Murexsul hexagonus and M. oxytatus refered to two different taxonomic species. Van Hyfte & Danvin (2018) established Murexsul pacaudi as a replacement name for Murex hexagonis Lamarck, 1816, non Gmelin, 1791. [details]
