Taxonomy The Paleozoic family Palaeacmaeidae has long been classified in the Monoplacophora. However, Webers & Yochelson (1999, J. Paleont. 73: 598-607) have showed that the Cambrian type species of Palaeacmaea is not a mollusc, but perhaps a Cnidaria. For lack of a better assignment, the name Palaeacmaeidae is entered in WoRMS in Monoplacophora, as a receptacle for the Paleozoic genus Parmophorella, under which some Recent species have been originally described.
