Biology Type of larval development: planktotrophic, inferred from multispiral protoconch. [details] Diagnosis Shell up to 7 mm high. Protoconch with little more than three whorls and blunt apex, with subsutural and suprasutural threads. Teleoconch with 7-8 convex whorls and deep suture, with about 12 thick and elevated axial folds per whorl, projecting as indentations over the suture. Surface with numerous, dense spiral cordlets (20-25 on penultimate whorl) running over the axial folds, separated by minutely punctured interspaces. Aperture nearly circular, with a thick external varix; there are usually 1-2 varixes remaining of previous positions of the aperture on the last two whorls. Colour of protoconch dark brown, of teleoconch light tan, the varix and the early whorls paler.
Despite being included in a different genus by Bouchet & Warén (1986), this species is most easily confused with Opalia abboti Clench & Turner, 1952, particularly when specimens have the intritacalx eroded. Opalia abbotti is smaller, the teleoconch is white, with much lower axial folds which hardly project over the suture and has half the number of spirals, separated by coarser lines of pores.
