Taxonomic remark Type locality: Gatope [erroneous, or introduced?; see below]. The syntype illustrated by Crosse (1894: 267, pl. X, fig. 2) is MNHN 21341 (ex collection of the Journal de Conchyliologie [not listed by Fischer?Piette 1950]). It clearly belongs to fibratus and strongly resembles guestieri from the Ile des Pins. Another specimen (NHM 1929.9.14.4; not examined) was listed by Breure & Schouten (1985: 61). When he established the name gatopensis, Crosse referred to the material he (Crosse 1870: 242-243) had earlier described from Gatope and “Ferme modèle” [an experimental farm established near Nouméa in the 1860s]. If these localities are not erroneous, then the material must have originated from populations translocated for snail farming. Bulimus souvillei var. gatopensis is conchologically very different from P. fibratus alexander, which is present in the mountains inland of Gatope; no population of P. fibratus is presently (or was historically) known from the coast at Gatope, and no material identified as gatopensis was ever recorded
again. (Fig. 28) [details]
